Most label problems are not printing problems. The print was fine when it left our floor — the label curled in a chiller, went translucent against oil, or peeled off a recycled carton in a cold warehouse. Those are material decisions, and they usually get made in about thirty seconds, by copying whatever the last supplier quoted.
This page is how we would make that decision if it were our product. It is written by a factory that prints on all of these every week, so it includes the parts that do not flatter us — the jobs where the cheap material is the right answer.
Start with five questions
Answer these before comparing materials. Four out of five specifications fall out of the answers.
- What does the label get stuck to? Glass, PET bottle, HDPE drum, corrugated carton, recycled kraft box, painted metal. Low-surface-energy plastics such as HDPE and PP, and rough recycled board, need a different adhesive from glass.
- What does it live through? Condensation in a chiller, months of UV on a shelf, a hot-fill line, a steam sterilisation cycle, freezer to room temperature, oil on the outside of a food bag.
- How long does it have to stay legible? Six weeks to a shelf, or five years on an industrial asset.
- Does anyone need to write on it, scan it, or remove it cleanly?
- What is the run size, and will the artwork change? A hundred pieces of twenty versions and a hundred thousand of one are different jobs, not different quantities.
The materials, by what they actually survive
Coated paper (semi-gloss, matt)
The default, and often correct. Best print quality per unit cost, takes varnish and lamination, dies cleanly into shapes. It fails when it gets wet, oily, or frozen and then thawed: the fibres wick moisture and the label wrinkles or goes transparent. Use it for dry-goods retail, cartons, and anything where the label is a message rather than a survivor.
Kraft and uncoated paper
Chosen for how it looks, not how it performs. Brown stock shifts every colour printed on it, so approve colour on the actual substrate rather than from a screen. Good for craft food, beverage and cosmetics where the fibre look is the point; the same moisture limits as coated paper apply. Kraft Paper Labels.
BOPP film (white, clear, matt)
The workhorse for anything wet. Water and oil have no effect, it conforms to squeezable bottles, and clear BOPP gives the no-label look on glass and PET. It is not a heat material — leave it off anything sterilised or sitting against an engine. Clear on clear is where cheap printing shows: it needs an opaque white underprint, laid down properly. PET film
Where BOPP stops. Stiffer, dimensionally stable, and the one film that takes real temperature — nameplates, electronics, industrial assets, anything hot-filled or autoclaved. It tears less readily than paper but splits once a tear starts, so it suits flat rigid surfaces more than squeezables. PET Labels.
Synthetic paper
Prints like paper, behaves like film. Matt, writable with a pen, opaque, and it stretches rather than tears. The answer when someone wants a paper look on a product that keeps destroying paper labels. Moderate temperature range only. Synthetic Paper Labels.
Metallized (silver) stock
A decorative decision rather than a performance one. There are several different silvers and they photograph very differently — pick from a printed sample, not from a name. Metallized Labels.
Thermal and thermal transfer
For labels you print yourself. Direct thermal fades with heat and light and belongs on short-life logistics; thermal transfer with the right ribbon survives years. Match the ribbon to the facestock or the print rubs off. Thermal Labels.

The three mistakes we see most
Specifying the facestock and forgetting the adhesive
The face decides what the label survives; the adhesive decides whether it stays on. Permanent, removable, freezer-grade and high-tack for recycled board are different products. A film label on a cold HDPE drum with a general-purpose adhesive will lift at the edges within days.
Approving colour on screen
Every substrate shifts colour — brown kraft most, clear film next. Approve on the actual stock.
Buying a year of stock on an untested specification
Print a small quantity, put it on the real product, and let it live in the real conditions for a few weeks first.
How we would work through it with you
Send the label size, the surface it goes on, the conditions it lives through, and your artwork. We will tell you which facestock and adhesive we would specify and why — including when the cheaper material is the right one.
If the application is borderline, we test it rather than guess. Our own laboratory runs holding tack, friction resistance, and high- and low-temperature resistance on the actual material and adhesive, so a specification that has to survive something unusual is checked here before it reaches your filling line.
